The seal band belongs to a document dated 1371.

However, the document is a forgery. It is associated with the English antiquarian John Hardyng, who in the 15th century produced or commissioned several forged documents intended to support the alleged English overlordship of Scotland. Whether Hardyng used an “old” band for the seal to make the forgery appear more authentic, or whether the band itself dates from the 15th century, is not known.

The style of the band is consistent with both periods.

This is a band with multicoloured brocading. The ground weave consists of linen and silk threads, although only the silk is visible in the finished band.

The original band is 2.1 cm wide, and 58.3 cm of it has survived.

For my version, I used linen and silk threads for the ground weave and brocaded it with silver and silk thread. At 2.5 cm wide, my version is slightly wider than the original.
