Über diese Borte ist bislang nur wenig veröffentlicht. Die Grundlage für meine Rekonstruktion bildet ein Vortrag von Orsolya Zay auf dem Textilforum in Mayen im Jahr 2025, in dem sie den Fund und seine Besonderheiten anhand mehrerer Abbildungen vorstellte. Außerdem präsentierte sie einen Rekonstruktionsvorschlag für das Muster.
Very little has been published about this band to date. My reconstruction is based on a lecture given by Orsolya Zay at the Textile Forum in Mayen in 2025, in which she presented the find and its distinctive features using several illustrations. She also presented a proposed reconstruction of the pattern.
Das Gewebe ist nur in den Bereichen erhalten, in denen die Metallfäden korrodiert waren. Dadurch sind vor allem der broschierte Musterbereich sowie Teile des Randes überliefert, die ursprünglich mit einem Metallgeflecht verziert waren. Angaben zu den ursprünglichen Abmessungen des Gürtels liegen meines Wissens nicht vor. Aufgrund der erhaltenen Fragmente schätze ich die Breite auf etwa 4 cm. Da es sich um einen Männergürtel handelt, dürfte seine ursprüngliche Länge mindestens 100 cm betragen haben.
The fabric has survived only in those areas where the metal threads had corroded. As a result, the brocaded patterned section in particular, as well as parts of the edge that were originally decorated with a metal braid, have been preserved. To my knowledge, there are no details regarding the belt’s original dimensions. Based on the surviving fragments, I estimate the width to be around 4 cm. As this is a men’s belt, its original length is likely to have been at least 100 cm.
Eine Besonderheit des Fundes ist, dass die Brettchen offenbar einseitig aufgezogen waren und kontinuierlich in dieselbe Richtung gedreht wurden. Dies wurde sowohl im Vortrag erläutert als auch auf den gezeigten Aufnahmen des Fundes deutlich.
A distinctive feature of the find is that the small tablets were apparently threaded from one side (S or Z) and rotated continuously in the same direction. This was explained in the lecture and was also clearly evident from the photographs of the find that were shown.
Für meine Rekonstruktion verwendete ich Seide Nm 11 sowie doppelt geführten Goldlahn als Broschierfaden. Das Band wurde mit insgesamt 36 Brettchen gewebt, davon 25 Musterbrettchen und 11 Randbrettchen. Vom historischen Vorbild bin ich jedoch bewusst abgewichen und habe die Brettchen abwechselnd in S- und Z-Stellung aufgezogen. Bei einer kontinuierlichen Drehung aller Brettchen in dieselbe Richtung würde sich das Band bei einem ausschließlich S- oder Z-gerichteten Aufzug stark verdrehen. Mit dem abwechselnden Aufzug lässt sich dieser Effekt vermeiden. Die fertige Borte ist 3 cm breit.
For my reconstruction, I used Nm 11 silk and double-stranded gold thread as the weft. The ribbon was woven using a total of 36 cards, including 25 pattern cards and 11 selvedge cards. However, I deliberately differed from the historical original and threaded the cards alternately in the S and Z positions. If all the cards were rotated continuously in the same direction, the ribbon would twist significantly if the cards were strung exclusively in an S or Z orientation. This effect can be avoided by stringing the cards alternately. The finished band is 3 cm wide.
