Diese Borte entstand nach dem Gürtel, den Margarete van Eyck auf ihrem Porträt trägt. Das Gemälde wurde 1439 von ihrem Ehemann Jan van Eyck (* um 1390 in Maaseik, † 1441 in Brügge) gemalt. Charakteristisch für die Mode dieser Zeit ist der breite Gürtel, der die Houppelande in der Taille zusammenhält.
This band was modelled after the belt worn by Margarete van Eyck in her portrait. The painting was created in 1439 by her husband, Jan van Eyck (born c. 1390 in Maaseik, died 1441 in Bruges). A characteristic feature of the fashion of that period is the wide belt that holds the houppelande together at the waist.
Anhand einer gemalten Darstellung lässt sich die verwendete Webtechnik jedoch nicht eindeutig bestimmen. Deshalb habe ich den Gürtel als Brettchengewebe rekonstruiert, um zu untersuchen, ob sich das auf dem Gemälde dargestellte Motiv auf diese Weise nachbilden lässt. Im Gegensatz zur Darstellung auf dem Gemälde, auf der der Gürtel dunkelgrün erscheint, habe ich meine Gürtel in Schwarz gewebt.
However, it is not possible to determine the weaving technique used with any certainty from a painted depiction alone. I have therefore reconstructed the belt using the tablet-weaving technique to investigate whether the motif depicted in the painting can be reproduced in this way. Unlike the depiction in the painting, in which the belt appears dark green, I have woven my belts in black.
Für das Band verwendete ich 72 Brettchen, die alle mit vier Fäden bezogen und vollständig in S-Stellung aufgezogen wurden. Sowohl Kette als auch Schuss bestehen aus schwarzer Realseide Nm 11. Die fertige Borte ist 5,9 cm breit. Die Arbeitszeit war geringer als zunächst erwartet.
For the band, I used 72 tablets, all of which were threaded with four threads and fully set in the S-position. Both the warp and weft are made of black real silk, NM 11. The finished band is 5.9 cm wide. It took less time to complete than I had initially expected.
Das Ergebnis zeigt jedoch deutliche Unterschiede zum Vorbild. Das Muster verläuft in der Rekonstruktion wesentlich steiler als auf dem Gemälde, zudem ist die Borte etwas zu schmal. Mit einem stärkeren Kettfaden und einem feineren Schussfaden ließe sich die Neigung des Musters vermutlich beeinflussen, sodass die Rekonstruktion dem gemalten Gürtel noch näherkäme.
However, the result shows significant differences from the original. In the reconstruction, the pattern runs at a much steeper angle than in the painting; furthermore, the band is slightly too narrow. Using a thicker warp thread and a finer weft thread would probably allow the angle of the pattern to be adjusted, bringing the reconstruction even closer to the belt depicted in the painting.
