Die Borte vom Prachtmantel aus dem Vehnemoor
1880 wurden im Vehnemoor beim Torfgraben eine Bronzeschale und viele Textilfragmente geborgen. Insgesamt waren es 29 Fragmente eines sog. Prachtmantels (nach Definition von Karl Schlabow hat ein Prachtmantel eine mehrfarbige brettchengewebte Kante von mehr als 100 Brettchen).
Die Bronzeschale ist ins 2. Jhd. datiert worden, aber es gibt keine C-14 Analyse der Textilien. Im Gegensatz zu Karl Schlabows ursprünglicher Annahme, dass die Borte zusammen mit dem Stoff gewebt wurde, ergaben spätere Untersuchungen von Susan Möller-Wiering und Lise Raeder Knudsen, dass die Borte nachträglich angebracht wurde.
Die ursprüngliche Breite des Mantels ist nicht bekannt.
Hatte Karl Schlabow ursprünglich 4 verschiedene Borten identifiziert, haben spätere Untersuchungen ergeben, dass aufgrund der Spinnrichtung 'nur' zwei unterschiedliche Borten in den Fragmenten identifiziert werden konnten. Ich habe hier eine der beiden Borte nachgewebt und insgesamt 128 Brettchen entsprechend der Beschreibung von Karl Schlabow aufgekettet. Die Anleitung sieht dann so aus: 
By extracting peat in the Vehnemoor in 1880 there was a find of a bronze bowl and 29 fragments of a so called 'Prachtmantel' (defined by Karl Schlabow as a cloak with a tablet woven border of 100 and more tablets in several colours). The bronze bowl is dated to the 2nd century but there is no dating of the textiles.
Opposite to Karl Schlabows suggestion that the tablet woven border was woven with the cloth, later examinations of Susan Möller-Wiering and Lise Raeder Knudsen had the result that the tablet woven border was later added to the cloth.
We only have the fragments so there is no knowledge of the original dimensions of the cloak.

Karl Schlabow described 4 different tablet woven bands but later examinations had the result that due to their spinning directions two tablet woven borders can be distinguished.
I have woven one of the wide borders and threaded 128 tablest according to Karl Schlabows description. 
Das fertige Band / finished
Ich habe hier 20/2 Wolle verwendet und habe ein etwa 10 cm breites Band gewebt. Im Original war es etwa 12 - 13 cm breit.
I've woven with 20/2 wool and got a 10 cm wide band. The original was approximate 12-13 cm wide.
